On Monday February 25th, 2013, the Ancaster Film Fest will be screening the expected Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, Amour, directed and written by Michael Haneke.  Screening times at Ancaster Silver City are 1:00, 4:00 and 7:15 p.m. with doors opening at 12:15, 3:15 and 6:15 p.m.  Cost for non-members is $9 at the matinees and $10 at the evening screening.

Amour is in French with English subtitles,  It is nominated for five Oscars (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (Emmanuelle Riva) and Best Foreign Language Film).  It had previously won the top prize at Cannes as well as numerous other awards from International Films Festivals and Film Critics Associations.  Recently Amour won Best Foreign Language Film at both the Golden Globes and the British Academy Awards and Emmanuelle Riva won Best Actress at the British Academy Awards.

Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) are in their eighties. They are cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter, who is also a musician, lives abroad with her family. One day, Anne has an attack and the couple’s bond of love is severely tested.  Michael Haneke is a writer director who likes to challenge an audience.  He has said that “It’s the duty of art to ask questions, not to provide answers. And if you want a clearer answer, I’ll have to pass.”  This is a movie with huge international acclaim but it also contains sensitive material that may disturb some people.

From the last screenings, the Ancaster Film Fest donated $1200 to the Hamilton Out of the Cold Program and will donate $300 to the Ancaster Food Drive.
