Blooms For Africa Garden Tour
Blooms for Africa Grandmothers group is one of 240 Grannie groups that have developed across Canada in response to Stephen Lewis’ plea to ameliorate the devastation caused by the AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa. Stephen Lewis says there is tragedy all over the world, but there is nothing that can come close to the devastation of the erasing of whole generations of African parents, leaving millions of orphans to be raised by their grandmothers who have virtually no resources.
These African Grandmothers are so buoyed by the support that they have been given by their Canadian sisters, that they have moved from basic survival, to creating self-sustaining services and businesses, to advocacy, in an attempt to change the basic power structure in their countries. This is as much about Women’s Rights as it is a medical support initiative.
One of thier fund raising events is a garden tour:
Blooms For Africa Garden Tour (Part of the Stephen Lewis Foundation)
This year’s event will be another night time tour and is scheduled for the evenings of
Fri., July 27th and Sat. July 28th 6- 10 pm.
The garden area this year is focussed on Hamilton with gardens just west off Locke St, in the Aberdeen, Mountainview area (beautiful old homes from an era when Hamilton was a thriving Steel City). This is a garden tour with a twist . Gardens are decorated with candles and twinkle lights at dusk. There are some VERY SPECIAL gardens on the tour this year, including the garden of Morag and Steve Smith (Red Green Show).
There are a range of Locke St. restaurants that will provide discounts on those two evenings so that you can either start with an early casual or elegant dinner, then do the tour (6p.m. to dusk), or do the tour, and stop for a treat at an ice cream or pizza shop when you are finished! Tickets are $20 for viewing 16 gardens. Tickets are available from Kari’s of Ancaster, A Different Drummer Books in Burlington, Cake and Loaf Artisan Bakery in Hamilton, and La Jardinière in Hamilton.
Please come out and help this very worthwhile cause.
