AFF Screens Oscar Nominee – Philomena
On Monday April 14th, AFF screens PHILOMENA at 4:00 p.m. at Ancaster Silver City. Doors open at 3:15. $9 for non members. The film was nominated for four Oscars (Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score) along with 60 other major nominations/awards. Proceeds will go to Ancaster Community Services. From the last screenings $1000 was donated to Neighbour to Neighbour and $300 to the Good Shepherd Food Bank.
Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, PHILOMENA focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Judi Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock and given away for adoption in the United States. She was forced to sign a contract that wouldn’t allow for any sort of inquiry into the son’s whereabouts. After starting a family years later in England and, for the most part, moving on with her life, Lee meets Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to find her long-lost son.
Directed by Stephen Frears (The Queen, Tamara Drewe, Mrs. Henderson Presents, Dirty Pretty Things, High Fidelity, The Grifters, My Beautiful Launderette)

It’s profoundly moving and thoroughly mind provoking, but despite the poignant subject matter, I promise you will not leave Philomena depressed. I’ve seen it twice and felt exhilarated, informed, enriched, absorbed and optimistic both times.
Chicago Sun-Times/Bill Zwecker
Director Steven Frears deserves special mention. A lesser filmmaker could so easily have turned this project into mushy, sentimental junk. The tear-jerking moments here are heartfelt and real. It’s the kind of filmmaking we see too little of today.
Rolling Stone/Peter Travers
It’s Dench, showing how faith and hellraising can reside in the same woman, who makes Philomena moving and memorable.
