In Mumbai, millions of people get their noontime lunches via “dabbawallahs,” deliverymen who deliver food in stacked metal cans from home to office and back using an involved color-coded system. The system was considered so foolproof that it was even studied by the Harvard Business School which found that the odds of a misdirected delivery are, incredibly, almost a million to one. This is a story about one of those unlikely errors.
Starring Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi and Slumdog Millionaire) and the radiant Nimrat Kaur, The Lunchbox is an impressive debut film for writer/director Ritesh Batra and has won or been nominated for 50 international awards. It is in Hindi with English subtitles.
“The Lunchbox” has the measured pace and Classical restraint of a romance from the ’30s or ’40s. The comedy is more wry than uproarious, the melodrama gently poignant rather than operatic, and the sentimentality just sweet enough to be satisfying rather than bothersome. A.O.Scott/NY Times
“The Lunchbox” is a feast of delights, one of the best stories about the connection between food and love the movies have ever seen. Colin Covert/Minneapolis Star Tribune
A delicious treat to wash away the taste of prefab Hollywood love stories,The Lunchbox is a film to savour. Eli Glasner/CBC
What is most endearing is the delicacy with which writer-director Ritesh Batra reveals the hopes, sorrows, regrets and fears of everyday people without any sign of condescension or narrative trickery. Deborah Young/Hollywood Reporter
